Our Founder, Mr. Provenzano

The three items above signify the core values of what the United Martial Arts Association personifies.  The chain and pendant on the left is our basis in faith in our Creator.  The center gold medallion is the basis of our system in Tang Soo Do.  The ring, of which there are only three in the entire world,  shows the core of our founder's roots in the martial arts.

He has personally trained with Mr. Norris. He served as a board member for Mr. Norris' United Fighting Arts Federation and was awarded the first-ever Instructor of the Year Award in 1981.

Over the years, Mr. Provenzano has trained many of the area's martial artists. He has also helped countless people improve their lives through the martial arts. His positive approach and his outstanding teaching style is at the very heart of what makes the United Martial Arts Association special.

Our System

The United Martial Arts Association, or UMAA, is founded on the Korean art of Tang Soo Do. Various aspects of other styles have been incorporated such as Judo and JuJitsu and Aikido. The resulting system is a combination of the best of many forms of martial arts and self defense techniques. This makes it a truly unique "united" system.

The UMAA Board

The UMAA board is our governing body. It determines policies and standards in all aspects of the organization. It is also the group that tests new black belts into the system. The members are: Mr. Benny Provenzano, Mr. John Stewart, Mr. Kenny Braden, Mrs. Carrie Rudy, Mr. J.D. Mihopolous Hari Sathappan, and Mr. Fred McGaffrey.

Our Training Method

In United Martial Arts, we feel it is important to foster a comfortable and supportive learning environment. Karate in itself is a very personal journey with each person learning at their own pace. Although our standards are high, our step by step training method assures the student will understand each concept fully before moving on. As a result, United Martial Arts promotes high quality black belts. In United Martial Arts, the only competition in the class is with yourself. The instructors are there to guide you and the other students to encourage you. We work together to achieve personal goals. When the individual succeeds, the group succeeds.

The Belt System

Most of the major martial arts systems use a "rank" or "belt" system. Originally, as legend had it, as the student trained their belt became dirtier until eventually it was black.  Today we use it simply as an outward sign of what the student has achieved. It also provides a tangible goal that the student can work toward. From the white belt through the final  degree or first red belt, each rank takes a minimum of three months to achieve. Then it is a minimum of 6 months from the first or final red belt to a black belt.  Our rank system is as follows:

White - Purple - Orange - Blue (two degrees) - Green (three degrees) - Red (three degrees) - Black

Why it takes so long to achieve a black belt

The ultimate goal for many students is to achieve a black belt. In reality, a black belt is just a piece of cloth. A black belt in a system of martial arts is much like a degree granted by any college. It is a sign that you have become proficient in any given skill or area of study. The system of martial arts we teach is very demanding and requires a lot time and much hard work. Just as any college is judged by the quality of it's graduates, United Martial Arts only graduates the best possible black belts.

So what if I don't care about getting a black belt

That's ok, some students don't. Whether your goal is just to get fit, lose weight, or learn some self-defense, United Martial Arts can help. In our school, your goals are important. Our goal is to give you the tools to achieve them.
